We live in what I like to call a microwave society. A society where everyone wants something immediately. We stand in front of the microwave and get impatient when it takes popcorn more than 60 seconds to pop. We get impatient when flipping through the channels on the TV. If something doesn’t catch our attention in 5 seconds, we are on to the next channel. We have even mastered using split screen television so we can watch multiple things at once.
Just a few years ago, we waited for the weird garbled sounds that occur when our modem dialed up the internet so that we could wait another 2-3 minutes to see if we “got mail”. Now we are upset when our high speed connection stalls for 5 seconds or a site loads in more than a few seconds.
We want to make the same amount of money in one month now when it took 3 years at a corporate job to make the same amount. And I thought I was a big shot in that corporate job with my pager and bag phone.
We leave a message or send an email or text and we get irritated when we do not get an immediate response. It is aggravating to us when there are 2 cars in front of us in the drive thru window.
You get the picture and I am sure you can relate to the things I am talking about and you could probably list many more. The bottom line is that we are a very impatient society and it spills over into every aspect of our lives. We also let it impact our business and our ability to make money.
We expect immediate profit when we run an online ad for the first time. We expect to make big money as soon as we open our company doors or flip the switch on our website. And when that does not happen, we can often get discouraged and doubts start creeping into our minds.
I firmly believe that we receive blessings only when God knows we are ready to receive those blessings. Some may call it Karma or the Law of Attraction but the same principle applies. If we get something before we are prepared for it, chances are very high that we will mess things up. Just look at lottery winners that are thrust into quick wealth as an example .
That is why I also think that most of us have a business that is exactly the size we can handle at this time. A business cannot grow larger than the leadership abilities of it’s owner or management team. That may be a tough pill for some of us to swallow, but deep down inside we know that it is true. I have seen some businesses that grew very fast when the owner was not mentally prepared or the structure was not in place and I cannot think of a business that has made it past the 5 year mark when that occurs. The business begins to disintegrate and implode after a short period of time.
Now, please do not get me wrong. I believe that it is very possible to make money and build a business very quickly and I also think that some people can grow a business from zero to millions in almost no time. But I also think that the growth in income must be matched by the personal growth of the owner and leader.
In order to do this, it is critical for the leader to embrace the journey instead of constantly measuring results. Get excited about the process of growing and becoming a better person.
Some people graduate from high school or college and they never pick up another book to read…they may not have read anything while they were in school, either. We were created to become something better everyday:
a better husband or wife,
a better parent,
a better friend,
a better business person,
and more successful in whatever we choose to pursue on a daily basis.
Be excited about where you are, but never be content. Be at peace, but not lazy. Remember that life is a process. It is not an event. A process must keep moving or it gets stagnant and can lock up. If you want to move quicker, just pick up the pace of the journey.
If you are feeling impatient and you want to speed up the process, implement the following in your life:

If you are feeling impatient and you want to speed up the process, implement the following in your life:
- Turn off the TV – it kills brain cells
- Read more – it stimulates brain cells
- Be in a constant mode of education – seminars, etc...
- Journal to capture your thoughts
- Spend time in prayer or meditation
- Exercise or at least move around to keep your blood pumping
- Take time to think without distractions
- Educate yourself in your area of expertise
- Find a mentor or coach that can speed up your journey
- Expect to grow every day
