Living in today’s world can be tough. Even though we have access to almost unlimited resources, food, tools and gadgets, we still have epidemics in the area of depression and suicide. And even if someone is not in a state of depression, we can look around and see that large numbers of people are unhappy and they lack true joy in their lives.
While this article is not meant it be a cure for sickness or make light of illness, it is my belief that simple steps can be taken to improve your life and those of the people you come in contact with on a daily basis.
I am always amazed at how much more energetic I feel when I speak to a stranger or when I receive a compliment. It just feels good and doesn’t everyone like feeling good?
While I am a big Star Wars fan I cannot really say that I understand the “force”. But I am confident that people can generate energy and pass energy to other people by doing some simple things on a regular basis:
Smile
This seems so simple but if it were easy everyone would be walking around with a perpetual smile on their face. I cannot think of one person that looks more attractive with a scowl on their face instead of a smile. If this is tough for you to do, then practice. Stand in front of the mirror and smile at yourself. Then go out and practice smiling at other people. They will either smile back or they will think that you are up to no good. Either way you win!
Be an Encourager
Your words are powerful. Use your words to lift people up and tell them how great they are. It is easy to be critical. It takes a little bit of effort to find the good in other people and then to verbalize those compliments. But just start searching out ways to encourage and compliment and you will be amazed by the positive responses. And you will also see how speaking uplifting words can become a habit.
Love People, Not Things
We have become a society of consumption and acquiring things. We all know someone that has a car or phone or suit or watch that is their most prized possession to the detriment of friends and even family. Nothing wrong with things, but put them in their proper place. People and relationships are much more valuable than any name brand piece of clothing or electronic device. Do not force your children or other people around you to wonder if they are more important to you than your iPhone.
Be a Giver, Not a Taker
It would be too simple to say that the world is filled with only 2 types of people - the givers and the takers. But it does seem as if people spend most of their time consistently in one of those camps. Giving creates energy and seems to build and grow. Everyone has been around the person that seems to walk in a room and suck all the air out because everything revolves around them. Do not be that person. Be others focused. Seek ways to give and sow seeds into the lives of other people. Those seeds will grow and reap bountiful harvests.
